My theme for this year’s Blogging from A to Z April Challenge is A-Z of a Working Mother. Today, A is for Aspirations.
Still was a rockstar at work, till she became a Mother..
So she became a Mother! Yes, she left her handsome salary package behind. Cause ‘Aspirations’ do change for a Mother! It is like you are driving a car at high speed. In control and with all the focus. Now you have to suddenly change your course. Cause a baby is on its way!
It is difficult! Letting go of the professional identity you’ve built all these years. Accepting that your pace needs to slow down now. Making way for others to run past you as you sit at the side and watch them.
Once you become a Mother, somethings change inside you. Every decision has a baby attribute added to it. You become an advocate of a healthy work life balance. You start pondering over the impossibles. Hoping to re construct your life around your tiny baby.
1. You prefer a cuddle at home over an after office party.
2. You love your everyday struggles of building a new career than a hectic lifestyle of a well established job.
3. You chose to earn more in terms of time spent with your kid than money.
Of believing in the impossibles. Confidence and determination of giving a new direction to your career, at your own terms. So eventually what you let go off looks small in comparison with what you gain, mommying!
So tell me! How did your aspirations change post motherhood? What is your story?
I can relate to this. True, our aspirations change after being a mommy! I left my career for my son too and am glad that I did that. I am glad that I gave my time to my son and saw him grow in front of me. Now that he is old, so I am back at work. 🙂
Great Shilpa! I guess every mom goes through this phase post mommyhood. We all have to re shape our careers to suit our children and lessen our mommy guilt 🙂

I agree. It is a balance that we all need to figure out. I let go of my career to raise my kid. I don’t regret one single moment of it. I would not give up these precious growing up years for anything in the world. Once he is older, I intend to resume a career of my own. Till then, I intend to make the most of my time with my little one.

Welcome to the blog Shantala. Life is about these memories that we make. Who would like to be consumed in work and let go of these super amazing growing up years.
I’m not a Mom but I can see how a child would make you completely change your priorities!
Totally Corrine! Mind,body,soul.. almost everything 🙂
I was not afforded the luxury of staying home with my child. I aspired to spend all my free time with her. I let the dishes pile high, the housework took a back seat and I played… lots and lots of playing. To this day my daughter, now 28, will say it’s what she most remembers… how much we played.
What a lovely and inspiring post – great start to the A to Z Challenge.

Thanks for appreciating Jenny. I am sure your daughter has lots and lots of memories of your “US” time together! At the end this is what matters. Your child has awesome memories of her growing up years! Stay Connected!
When my babies were little (and I was always tired), I would ask myself why I gave up a nice job as a programmer where I could eat lunch leisurely WITH TWO HANDS for one that required constant juggling (literally) and often a baby on at least one hip. After a few years I was asking myself why I was choosing to stay home with them and HOMESCHOOL them (that’s short for 24×7 responsibility) for a non-existent salary. But today, as the youngest prepares to go to college, I am grateful for the choices I made. Building a relationship with a person and re-discovering the world as you introduce them to it is a blessing that only time and love can buy. I chose the road less traveled and it has made all the difference!
So true Roberta! When I started looking back at work opportunities, I always thought why should I give up my kid’s time to some clients I don’t live for. That is not a life I want to lead. I am so glad you did stick to your decision and made a choice that makes all of us and your kids proud of you! Thanks for sharing your story. Stay Connected! 🙂
Hi Nancy! I have tremendous respect for you, and the decision you’ve taken. I’m sure it was really tough, but I’m sure in makes up with ample rewards of spending time with your loved ones! Good luck with the rest of your challenge!
Thanks a ton Hun! I loved your A for Arnab 🙂
I’m the mom who gave up the career path before it started. My college professors thought it was a waste of promising talent. This post reminds me why I did it.
Thank you for inspiring me today.
